In the Cambrian seas, life ran its wildest experiment. In the space of a few million years — an instant, geologically — nature produced more new body plans than in the three billion years before. Armor, compound eyes, claws, spines: every strategy was tried at once.

Almost every one of them failed. The Burgess Shale preserves the losers in exquisite detail — spectacular anatomies with no descendants. And among them swims a small, soft, unglamorous animal with one quiet invention: a stiff rod down its back. The notochord. The first backbone. Every fish, bird, whale and human descends from that idea.
